Purchased by Bart Massucco in 1996, the property had been in operation as a cow farm by the Alton Pickering family in the mid and late 1900's. The property's frontage had been sold as lots back in the mid 70's and the farm's remaining 35 acres left unfarmed and allowed to grow over. Developers engineered the property for development into a 44 house
subdivision
in the mid and late 80's but were twice unable to move forward with the project.
After purchasing the farm in December of 1996, Bart and his father cleared what would becomes the site for the house and main barn. The farm house and main barn construction began in the fall of of 1997 and the first 3 horses moved into the barn in the winter of 1997. Bart moved into the half built farm house in the spring of 1998 and continued finishing it while beginning to train what would be the first of the Birch Hollow show stock. The outdoor ring was completed in 2000 and the large indoor was added in the winter of 2002. An additional 10 acres were added in 2003 and clearing and fencing paddock space is on going.
Birch Hollow now houses 20-25 horses from weanlings through performance horses. Primarily a show jumping stable, Birch Hollow products have also excelled in the hunter ring, dressage arena and at combined training events. The farm stands three stallions and welcomes 4-6 new foals each spring. Bart is now joined at the farm by wife Marissa, son Liam and daughter Bronte.

The breeding operation at Birch Hollow began out of frustration over the expense of shopping for horses in Europe. With the best stallions in the world available to mare owners under $1000 and very low production costs, the high price of the European stock made little sense. It seemed reasonable to assume importing superb young stallions and using them on good mares should produce very good, if not occasionally outstanding riding horses.
The Birch Hollow mares are a collection of proven sport mares and Holsteiner broodmares from some of the best mare lines in Germany. Birch Hollow presently breeds from stams 730B, 569, 18A2, 1916 and 2004. Birch Hollow's main goal is to offer the American buyer reasonably priced young stock and semen from the best sport horse bloodlines available. We will continue to develop our show string around our young stallions and homebred stock so the buyer can clearly see the success of our breeding program and products.
